An in-depth Overview: Digital Workflows for Industrial Construction Sites
By Thomas Roithmeier, CEO & Co-Founder, INSITE IT GmbH
Have you ever worked on a construction site with no predefined processes? Imagine every worker and site manager tries to implement his own processes and ideas – and considers only his own area of work. It´s obvious that the whole construction site will earlier than later end up in a total chaos. Nobody is seeing the big picture and knows the consequences of acting.
With intelligent software tools and processes, individual interpretations are reduced to a minimum. Adding the right tools, it´s easy to digitalize tasks and documentation. To work in an efficient, fast, transparent and paperless environment, it’s essential to keep the whole supply chain from engineering to construction in mind.
Engineering at its best
Planning a hydropower plant or a steel production plant requires huge technical know-how. Nonetheless all material needed must be defined at this early stage. An accurate parts list is a perfect starting point for all following digital processes. Keep track of all manufacturing items in mobile tools such as Insite LMS systems. This makes all manufacturing processes like production, packing and shipping transparent. Based on RFID or QR code scans the manufacturing status of each item is exactly shown. Site managers can plan well ahead and give valid predictions when the material is shipped and will arrive onsite.
Site Logistics – no big challenge
Once the arrival date of the material is known it´s the site logistic managers turn. With mobile friendly tools like apps and scanners the arrival of material is documented: Receiving deliveries, change storage locations, inspect and count the material and hand over the material to construction.
When it comes to attendance control, construction sites are hard to track. To evaluate how much manpower was needed and how many external companies were onsite digital presence tracking is used
Know what's going on onsite
The dashboard often does not show the whole story. Soft facts are important for managers too. In daily logs everything happening on a construction site is reported. Add weather conditions and temperature as well as a summary of all activities. Collect all jobsite activities as they occur and mark delays right away. That way, supervisors or project managers, who receive a daily report, are aware of everything which happens onsite and can react promptly.
Know who's onsite
When it comes to attendance control, construction sites are hard to track. To evaluate how much manpower was needed and how many external companies were onsite digital presence tracking is used. Either finger print scans or ID-cards are a good way to document absence or presence and see data directly in the software.
Besides manpower and logistics, a main problem on industrial construction sites is the missing knowledge about installation items for pipeline or steel plant construction. It´s essential to know if all material needed is onsite already and in proper condition. On basis of installation items, various elements can be managed as required. The software – e.g. LMS software or app – assigns each installation item to a type with a defined dynamic number of activities. Additional features are a centralized administration of all installation items, creation of dynamic s-curves and pictures or attachments for each element.
Progress control for professionals
Different weightings additionally allow a realistic distribution of work to be performed. The goal is that each installation supervisor simply returns the progress on its desired basis, the overall progress of the project results automatically.
Perfect process, good results
Ideally all these processes are covered by one software and corresponding apps. No worker or site manager is in need to create own procedures any more. They are guided through set processes and equipped with the right mobile tools like phones and tablets to use apps onsite. Time is not wasted in searching materials or digging in paperwork anymore. With smooth processes, people can finally concentrate again on doing their work.
